Belknap County, NH
Welcome
On this site you will find a little bit of everything having to do with the people that lived in Belknap County, New Hampshire. Most information comes from my personal collection of newspapers and old ledgers full of obits, marriages, and other newspaper clippings. I have recently moved this site so please bare that in mind as I try to organize and continue to add as I have time. I have started a "what's new" page and will keep it updated. The search engine at the bottom of this page is updated every Friday. If you see any of your ancestors on these pages and would like me to link your email or homepage please let me know. I would also like to hear from anyone that has trouble viewing this site or finds mistakes. Thanks!

(written for the Belknap Republican 24 Mar 1899)
By Horace G. Whittier
This part of the city of Laconia is situated at the outlet of Lake Paugus through which all waters of the beautiful and charming lake Winnipesaukee pass as they wend their circuious way through the lakes Opechee and Winnisquam respectively to the Merrimack river which finds its exit into the broad Atlantic. It is situated on the White Mountain division of the Boston & Maine railroad, twenty-nine miles north of Concord and four miles south of the Weirs which is so widely known as a summer resort, also well known as the rendezvous of the state department of the G.A.R., both of which lie on the shore of the beautiful Winnispesaukee of which every citizen of New Hampshire feels justly proud. Here also is the junction of the Lake Shore railroad, connecting this section of the country with Alton Bay. Dover, the state of Maine and all east of that state.
Lakeport's original name was Folsom's Falls, as a man of this name was the first settler, about the year 1770. A few years later Mr. Folsom erected a mill and then it was called Folsom's Mills.
In the year of 1825 Nathan Batchelder purchased the plant and erected more mills and then again the same was changed to Batchelder's Mills, which it retained until the year 1829, when it was christened as Lake Village, but after a period of between six and seven years it was beheaded and was known as Lake Village until 1891 when, by a vote of the citizens in a meeting called for that purpose, it was known as Lakeport and its post office and railroad station are so laid down on the maps of recent issue.
When, on March 23, 1893, Laconia was chartered as a city, Lakeport was severed from the old town of Gilford (of which it had held an important place) then it was made to constitute the largest ward of the city (Ward 6), with about 700 voters.
Sanbornton, New Hampshire
Sanbornton lies in the western part of Belknap County, and is bounded as follows: West, by Merrimack County; East, by Great Bay; South by Tilton; North, by Meredith and New Hampton. The township was granted by the Masonian proprietors, December 31, 1748, to John Sanborn, of Hampton, and others. The grantees were residents of Hampton, Exeter and Stratham, twelve of whom were named Sanborn; hence the name of the town. Settlements were retarded by reason of trouble with the Indians, and none were permantly made until 1764. In 1768 there were thirty-two families in town. The first settlers were Moses Danforth, Thomas Danforth, Solomon Copp, Daniel Fifield, Samuel Shepard, John Sanborn, David Dusin and Andrew Rowen, in 1764.
